Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

Ever heard of an “Oklahoma Onion Burger” ?? Well, of course not. It wasn't until I saw them on "The Great Food Truck Race" TV show last year!  I can't remember what season this one aired now, but they're killer! What not to forget the burger! 😉

* Ingredients :

° canola or vegetable oil, enough to lightly oil the sump

° 1 lb hamburger

° 1 to 2 sweet onions, very thinly sliced (about a third of an onion per burger or as desired)

° salt

° coarsely ground black pepper

° 3 to 6 slices of American cheese

° 3 to 6 hamburger buns, steamed or toasted

++Toppings may include:

° lettuce (whole leaves, chopped or grated), sliced tomatoes, slices of sweet or dill pickles, mayo, ketchup, A.1. steak sauce, mustard, relish, round peperoncini peppers, or whatever you like!

* Instructions :

Get the pan from the grill very hot. Oil grill where the burgers go. Place a meat ball (1/3 lb or 1/6 pound for thinner burgers / see note) on the hot grill and mash a little with a pointed spatula.

Place a small handful of very thinly sliced onions on top, then mash the burger the rest of the way, mashing the onions into the meat.

Season the top with salt and pepper and let cook. Don't mess with that.

When the bottom is dark brown and the burger is almost done, scrape it under the burger to get the “skin” and turn it over.

Keep to cooked for an extra 2 to 3 min . Top with cheese and melt for about 1 to 2 minutes more. * While the cheese is melting, you can place the buns, cut them on the grill for toasting.

Place the burger on the lower bun, dress it how you like it, place it on the top bun and dig !
